Hello Everyone, thanks for all your comments re humira. I'm expecting the phonecall for delivery of my first injection any day now. I just wondered with all the advice to take care around germs, etc - what do you do if hubby or son has cold or cough? Also, do you avoid visitors too if they've got a cold? Can make things a bit awkward! What does everyone out there do, would really welcome your advice! Many thanks....... Allison x

Hi Allison,
When I started the triple therapy, I too was scared of getting germs with my immunity being low so I stayed away and didn't have people to the house if they were poorly, as for family just tried my best to keep everyone healthy and if they got colds etc Told them to stay in bed and not spread germs. Antiseptic wipes for door handles etc keep germs down too. Eventually you build yourself up to whats right for you. I think to it's a shock to the system and you have to get your head around a great deal emotionally first. Good luck with your new meds hope they are a great success for you. Lorna xx

Hi Allison I think 'be aware' is key. You can't completely shut yourself away but you can exercise caution when necessary. Most of the time your body will be able to fight minor infections so I wouldn't worry too much otherwise you'll become a recluse Lyn x

HI Alison,
I agree with Lyn, you can't shut yourself away but be wary! If family members get colds or flu, I take the usual precautions of handwashing etc and hope for the best! You could ask people not to visit if they have a cold, but then you could sit on a bus next to someone who has one and pick it up that way! So just carry on as normal and hope for the best. I've been on Humira for 12 months now and haven't had any more problems with infections than I had without it.
Love, Doreen xx

I have had a specific problem with my oldest boy starting school and bringing back a whole series of slightly odd new-to-me-bugs, kiddies usually having a different viral and bacterial profile on the go-round than the adult population.
It never occured to me to limit exposure to them anymore than normal decent hygiene, it was one of those things that had to be gone through. I ended up having a pretty grim late winter/spring with endless colds, rhinovirus and throat infections plus the norovirus. I didn't get ill more often than anyone else but everyone would spring back in 1-3 days and I'd be ill a week or 10 days, which is different for me. If I was infected though I would hold off next humira dose so as not to provoke the invader further. It so happened that i ended up only being able to take about 3 doses in 3 months, and I flared again, but all is cool again now.
Yes, carry on, hope for the best and good luck. You soon stop feeling wobbly and vulnerable if the Humira strenghtens you in terms of less pain and more activity. xfx

Thanks everyone for your comments. I started with my first humira jab yesterday and so far I feel ok, no side effects. Although I do feel more tired than usual. I just wondered how long it took to kick in with you guys and gals out there. I have heard that some people respond in a couple of days but that sounds miraculous!!!!! Luv Allison xxx
